Be Mine: Falling in Love in London

Kaylee wasn’t expecting to meet the man of her dreams while studying abroad on an AIFS Customized Faculty-Led Program in London — particularly one who went to her home university, the University of St. Thomas. Somewhere in between exploring the city and focusing on putting the “study” in “study abroad,” she met Jake. Their decision to take the leap and study abroad brought them together, and we are so glad to have been able to provide the conduit for them to meet. Kaylee recently shared their story with us:

In the fall of 2016, I studied abroad in London with 38 other students from my university. Somewhere along the way, I found a boy to courtesy laugh at my puns, and decided to keep him around. Now he’s my best friend who I also get to be in love with. This is the super sappy contentment you can’t make up, people.

I didn’t have the “typical” study abroad romance that people expect to hear about. Instead of meeting some British boy outside of my study abroad program (like every single person on the planet likes to joke about once they find out you’re going to the U.K.), it was actually within it that I ended up meeting my best friend, Jake. He was the cute, dorky boy that sat next to me in classes, and walked me home after a night out at the pub. I didn’t know him before going abroad, but I’m so glad I did by the end of it. Plus, it was nice to know that our time together didn’t have to end once the semester did.

Flash forward to today and my heart is still as full and content as it was when we first traveled through Europe together. It’s now been over a year since we were in London, and I can honestly say that I still feel as thrilled, eager, and happy as I did on our first trip together. He is now my most cherished friend, adventure buddy, #1 supporter, and Netflix companion. I am in no way promoting seeking out someone special while you’re abroad, because that definitely shouldn’t be the goal. But, if you do happen to stumble across someone who’s the same type of dorky and weird as you are, keep ’em. I’m so, so glad that I did.

Here’s to 2018 being another year full of big laughs, little adventures, and so much sap it makes you feel sick all the time!
